Car lifts

Without knowledge on cars or whatever vehicles when I was young made me wonder what’s the purpose of the concrete platform in auto repair shops I usually see in our little hometown. Later did I know that it’s a car lift (a concrete lift???) used when auto mechanics need to check or repair something under the car. So that would be a lot easier for them than crawling on their back under the vehicle. The car being elevated a bit gave them a extra room for movement but that was a fixed elevation. What if it needs to be elevated more? Need to construct another lift? Thanks to technology for the transformation of car lifts from concretes to sturdy metals. It made life a lot easier for auto mechanics.
