How To Have A Guilt Free Holiday In Lanzarote
By Kerslyn On April 18th, 2013Lanzarote is a truly spectacular destination if you’re looking to go on holiday, and from volcanic sands to amazing culture, there are a number of things to see and do here. Part of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote offers rocky walking trails and dramatic landscapes, as well as stunning mountains. At over 670m above sea level, Penas is the island’s highest peak, and Lanzarote is also home to Cueva de los Verdes lava tube, the largest underwater volcanic stretch in the world.
With volcanic origins, the island was born from mass eruptions, where the molten lava solidified after cooling from the ocean. This produced vast rock formations, and over millions of years, canary birds used the island as their natural habitat. Millions of tourists flock to this island every year to experience the blistering sunshine, great food and warm hospitality, however there are many more attractions to see and activities to do – you just have to know where to look!
Museo de Arte Contemporaneo
One of the very few museums on the island, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo offers a great day out for families and couples alike. The museum was transformed into a sleek, contemporary art gallery in 1994, and is housed in one of the island’s most loved structures, Castillo de San Jose.
This structure was built in the 18th century as a base from which to combat pirates, and also to provide a place from which the unemployed could search for the latest job opportunities. Nowadays, its walls are covered with great artworks from some of the island’s best painters, as well as a number of exhibitions from the mainland.
Museo del Emigrante Canario
Lanzarote is famous all over the world for its canary population, and that’s because of the conservation efforts taken on by the island’s population as well as the government. Built in the 16th century, the Museo del Emigrante Canario is the oldest fort on Lanzarote, and it offers sweeping views of the island as well as amazing architecture.
Documenting the bird’s vast history of migration from the Spanish shores to the island, the museum is something of a local treasure, and provides literally everything you need to know about the beautiful creatures. Timanfaya National Park
The Timanfaya National Park is one of the most popular places for tourists to visit on the island. Not only is it UNESCO protected as a World Heritage Site, but it offers some of the most stunning volcanic lava fields on the planet, nicknamed the ‘lunar landscape’. There are a number of tour busses that set off from the park entrance every day, and depending on your driver, it can take up to two hours to see the vast landscapes.
Some of the ground is so hot that tourists aren’t allowed to step foot off the bus, however there are parts of the park that are cool enough to explore. There’s also a highly rated camel safari park excursion that is great if you’re travelling with your children, as well as a number of drink stations and coffee houses along the way to take a break in.
